Online dangers
There is a need for caution and consideration when posting information and photos online. I just spoke to an undergraduate that is considering medical/nursing/PA school. He told me about friends that post on social networking sites photos of them drinking or using illegal substances and they brag about drinking to excess or partying constantly. Once something is posted, it remains in cyperspace and these types of postings can come back to harm a potential licensure applicant.
But those practitioners currently licensed should also beware since any information posted could be used against them: complaining about work, coworkers, patients, etc. Remember that anything put in writing can be used against you. Another interesting area of potential problems that most practitioners do not think about are ex-spouses, ex-boyfriends/girlfriends, ex-friends, and unhappy family members. When I worked at the Medical Board, we used to get very damaging information from these sources in the form of letters, cards, and notes. So, unless you want to see it again definitely do not put it in writing.
You must always be the professional including when you are socializing—you never know!
